'For conspicuous gallantry in action. Though wounded early in the engagement, he proceeded, without waiting to have his wounds dressed, to organize his company as a working party, and supervised the work for about ten hours. He did fine work throughout, and displayed great coolness and courage.'

Transferred to England, 21 July 1916, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 21 July 1916 (gun shot wound, left arm and head) Transferred to 32nd Bn, to command Bn, 28 July 1916, and promoted Lt Colonel; taken on strength and assumed command, 28 August 1916. Awarded the DSO, August 1916.

Admitted to 15th Australian Field Ambulance, 22 March 1917 (chronic otorrhoea); rejoined unit, 11 April 1917. Admitted to 15th Australian Field Ambulance, 12 April 1917 (chronic otorrhoea); rejoined unit, 23 April 1917.

Posted to command 5th Australian Division Base Depot, Etaples, 9 May 1917. On leave to England, 8 June 1917; returned from leave, 23 June 1917. Granted 3 weeks' leave in England (Medical Board proceedings), 6 October 1917. Relinquished appointment as CO, 5th Australian Division Base Depot, 23 September 1917. Attached to Headquarters, AIF Depots in the UK, for duty and leave, 26 January 1919. Attached to Sports Control Section, London, 20 June 1919.
