Admitted to 8th Field Ambulance, Outpost Road Head, 14 April 1916 (influenza); discharged to unit, 20 April 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Reported missing, 20 July 1916. Court of enquiry, held in the field, 12 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'killed in action, 20 July 1916). Statement, 2993 Pte W. TAYLOR, 32nd Bn (patient, 2nd Southern General Hospital, Southmead, Bristol, England), 8 January 1917: 'My mate Brighton, George 2694, 32nd Battn. told me that he had seen Sergt Beare killed at Armentieres at 8.30 a.m. about July 20th/16. He stood up and had five shots rapid. He was then called to breakfast and said "I'll have just one more shot" when a bullet took him in the middle of his forehead.'
