Previous military service | Enlisted as a signaller in the 92nd Infantry Regiment, Citizen Military Forces, Launceston, 30 April 1912; received his commission on 7 May 1914. When Australia called for volunteers for the first contingent he tried three times unsuccessfully to enlist - he failed to draw the chest measurement by one inch - but got through on 5 January 1915. He resigned his commission and enlisted as a private in the 12th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement.
