Military Medal 'For considerable courage and coolness during enemy raid and five hours'bombardment on HOUPLINES Left Sub-sector on 22nd January, 1917. From the front parapet under heavy shelling he opened rifle fire and shot a man dressed in blue uniform leading the raiders as they crossed No Man's Land. He then acted as No. 2 to No. 491 Private G. LIDDLE, who was firing a Lewis gun. He observed the fire and assisted with the gun from which fire was directed on the enemy during the advance and retreat, inflicting many losses. LIDDELL's action played an important part in the defeat of the raiders.'
