War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 5 April 1915. Promoted Lieutenant, 25 April 1915. Wounded in action, 25 April 1915 (gun shot wound, left ankle); admitted to Deaconnesses' Hospital, Alexandria, 30 April 1915; discharged to duty, 19 June 1916. Embarked Alexandria to rejoin unit, 21 June 1916; rejoined unit, Gallipoli, 26 June 1915. Slightly wounded, 12 July 1915 (injury, eye, chest); disembarked Malta, 20 July 1915; rejoined Bn, Sarpi Camp, Lemnos, 22 October 1915. To command D Company temporarily, 22 October 1915. Admitted to 2nd Field Ambulance, 14 November 1915 (sprained amkle); transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Lemnos, 14 November 1915; rejoined Bn, Gallipoli, 23 November 1915. Statement, 3686 Sergeant S. BENT, A Company, 59th Bn, 24 August 1916: 'I saw Capt. Liddelow in a shell hole during the attack at Fleurbaix on July 19th. He was wounded and Pte. J. Gleeson, B. Co., was with him. About 5 minutes after I aw him, Gleeson crawled over to me and told me that he was dead. A shell had killed him.' Second statement, 4588 Pte C.H. SAUNDERS, 59th Bn (patient, 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, England), 23 August 1916: 'Saunders ... states he saw Capt. Liddelow wounded at fleurbaix. Mr. Liddelow had been over to [the] German trenches, and was coming back. he was severely wounded in the forehead. Saunders tried to help Mr. Liddelow back, but being badly wounded himself Mr. Liddelow ordered him back, this was between one and two in [the] morning of 19th. & 20th.[T]hat is the last seen of Mr. Liddelow, who was nearer the German trenches than his Battalion, as many High Explosive shells (sic).' |
