'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as stretcher bearer. He carried on his work under direct machine gun and rifle fire, and rendered splendid service in attending to the wounded of all battalions. He showed magnificent coolness and devotion to duty, and many men owe their lives to his courage in the face of heavy fire.'
