Military Medal 'During the night of the 21st/22nd August, 1918, between ETINEHEM and the 35th Infantry Battalion Headquarters on our left, immediately west of BRAY SUR SOMME, No. 251 Lance Corporal LING was in charge of the maintenance of the telephone line between the Headquarters of this Unit and those of the 35th Infantry Battalion with whom it was absolutely necessary to keep in touch. The whole of this area for two hours before Zero, and after the operations started, was practically under the worst enemy shell fire in the whole neighbourhood, the line being continuously broken. Lance Corporal LING, showing absolute fearlessness and great coolness throughout encouraged and helped his men in their task during the whole of this period, and it was only through his personal energy and devotion to duty that communications were kept up at all. His work throughout the night, was such as to set an exceptionally fine example to the men working under him.'
