'At BAUMETZ on the night of 22nd/23rd March, 1917, Private LISTER displayed conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. He was in charge of a Lewis Gun which accompanied a fighting patrol of 1 Officer and 20 other ranks. When some 1500 yards out the patrol was suddenly fired on from the left rear and right front by machine guns and rifles. The patrol at once threw themselves on the ground and Private LISTER, with his Lewis Gun, beat down the left rear attack, many groans being heard from that direction. He then directed his gun on the right front and kept the machine guns there engaged until the patrol could get back, when he withdrew his gun. One man of the patrol was killed, and had it not been for Private LISTERUs coolness and courage the entire patrol would have been wiped out. Later on, on the morning 23rd March, when the enemy attacked our flank and rear, Private LISTER again showed admirable coolness and courage in handling his gun in difficult positions under fire and giving great assistance in repelling the attack.'
