War service: Egypt, Western Front Promoted Sergeant, Canal Zone, 1 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 26 March 1916. Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, 29 November 1916; promoted Lieutenant, 1 March 1917. Temporarily attached to 16th Company, Australian Army Service Corps, 29 August 1917; rejoined 21st Bn from detachment, 1 September 1917. Detached to 23rd Veterinary School, 1 September 1917. Wounded, 13 October 1917; remained at duty. Rejoined 21st Bn from detachment, 11 September 1917. CO, 21st Bn, Lt-Col B. DUGGAN, reported, 10 December 1917: 'This Officer in civil life was a Commercial Traveller and is addicted to drink. He has had over 2½ years service and has done excellent work. Though he has never overstepped the mark sufficiently enough to warrant my applying for Court Martial, lately his moral fibre has broken down to such an extent that I have had to relieve him of the position of Transport Officer of this Battalion. At present I have not enough confidence in Lieut. Beaumont to entrust him with the duties of an Officer, and recommend that he be given a prolonged rest or sent to Australia. Lieut. Beaumont is married and has expressed his willingness to be returned.' Marched out to England for return to Australia, 2 January 1918.
