'During Operations East of VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 9th August 1918. The Company to which this N.C .O. belongs was detailed to assist in the capture of VAUVILLERS. Early in the attack both his Platoon Commander and Platoon Sergeant became casualties, and his Platoon disorganised and held up by heavy enemy Machine Gun fire. He immediately assumed command of the Platoon and with utter disregard to personal safety succeeded in re-organising them. He then displayed great coolness and judgment in leading the Platoon forward and succeeded in reaching his objective with few casualties. He showed throughout a splendid spirit of devotion to duty and courage and was a fine example and inspiration to the men of his Platoon.'
