'On 28th August 1918 this N.C.O. was posted at a forward Relay Post in the neighbourhood of village of FOUCAUCOURT South of PERONNE. His position was subjected to constant heavy shelling. For 9 hours he encouraged and lead his squad of bearers in their work of evacuation of the wounded, setting them a fine example of steadfast courage. 14 times he crossed the 700 yards between his post and the dressing station with wounded under a murderous fire, two out of his fourteen (14) patients being wounded a second time during the trip across so severe was the artillery fire. He displayed in a most eminent degree heroism and cheerful obedience to duty.'
