War service: Egypt, Western Front Allotted to and proceeded to join 59th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 26 February 1916, and reverted to the ranks on joining the Bn. Promoted Sergeant, Ferry Post, 4 March 1916. Admitted to 4th Field Ambulance, 30 March 1916 (vomiting), and transferred same day to 1st Australian Stationary Hospital, Ismailia; discharged to duty, 3 April 1916. Reverted to ranks at own request, 6 June 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Promoted Corporal, 3 July 1916. Appointed Lance Sergeant, 12 July 1916. Posted missing (reported wounded), 19 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 29 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Handwritten note on Form B103: 'Presumed to be Buried In No Man's Land approx 5J90 43 to 5K02.5.1 Sheet Hazebrouck 5A'. Statement, Red Cross File No 1631110, 664 Pte J. BLAIR, 21st/59th Bn (patient, 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, England), 29 November 1917: 'I saw Lucas killed - there were three Sergeants blown to bits by a shell, landed right in the midst of them on the 19th July at Fleurbaix.' Note by interviewer: 'A rather excitable man but information given lucidly and evidently bonafide. He says only 80 were left out of their battalion, and only six left out of the machine gun corps, and if this be approximately correct I should accept his statement as above.'
