Military Medal 'On 5th October, 1918, during attack on MONTBREHAIN, north of ST. QUENTIN, on the platoon commander becoming a casualty Sergeant MACKIN took charge and handled his men in the attack on an enemy post containing four machine guns, in a highly creditable manner. Later on when an enemy counter attack threatened to cut off a platoon that had overrun the objective Sergeant MACKIN attacked the enemy who were working around the exposed platoon and by skilful manoeuvring and covering fire defeated the enemy attempt, and allowed the line to be adjusted. During the remainder of the day he acted in a very courageous and determined manner in spite of the fact that at times the position on the flanks was very obscure. During the consolidation he had to frequently pass between posts over ground swept by fire from close range.'
