Military Medal 'On the morning of the 15th April 1917, the 43rd Battery was being heavily shelled when in position near LONGATTE. The Battery Commander and one Subaltern had been killed and Sergeant MacPHAIL was the only Senior Non Commissioned Officer left - the remaining Sergeants being either killed or wounded. He took charge of the men and supervised the carrying of the wounded to a place of safety, showing great devotion and courage under continuous heavy shelling.'
