'For conspicuous gallantry on the 23rd day of August, 1918, at HERLEVILLE WOOD. During the attack, after his platoon Officer had been killed, this N.C.O. took charge of his platoon and led them with great daring and dash. At one point where his platoon was being temporarily held up by hostile Machine Guns, and while the tanks were engaged in blowing these guns out, this N.C.O. went out in the open under very heavy Machine Gun fire and personally dressed and brought back two wounded soldieres to safety. He showed great personal courage and skilful leadership.' (Previously recommended for D.C.M.)
