Proceeded to 57th Bn, Zeitoun, 23 February 1916. Transferred to 60th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 15 March 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 26 April 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 29 June 1916.

Wounded in action, 21 July 1916 (gun shot wound, left arm and leg); invalided to England, 22 July 1916, and admitted to Edmonton Military Hospital (wound: severe). Transferred to Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital, Pinner, Middlesex, 11 September 1916; transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, 15 November 1916; discharged to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 18 November 1916.

Commenced return to Australia from Portland on board HT 'Benalla', 13 February 1917; discharged, 11 August 1917 (medically unfit).
