'At CLERY-sur-SOMME on 31st August 1918, for gallantry and devotion to duty during action. When the Company was held up he together with a comrade rushed forward with their Lewis gun and killed the enemy crews also capturing the machine guns. When the final objective had been reached they established their gun forward and held the opposition while consolidation was being carried out.'
