Military Medal

'Showed great bravery and devotion to duty on 22nd January, 1917, during heavy bombardment on HOUPLINES Left Sub-sector when he ran through an intense barrage from the front line to Battalion Headquarters with a written S.O.S. message from his Company Commander to whom he returned. He again came back to Battalion Headquarters an hour later with another message, the barrage still being on. On 1st February, 1917, this soldier again showed great bravery in getting through the enemy's bombardment with a message from the front line to Battalion Headquarters after the telephone communication had been severed.'
