'For devotion to duty forward of PROYART on the night 22nd/23rd August, 1918. Sapper MARTIN acted as guide to the working parties that carried out the consolidation of the line. His coolness, courage and accurate knowledge of the ground obtained through a previous reconnaissance enabled him to lead his parties direct to their works and to avoid the heavy shelled areas thus saving casualties amongst the men and allowing of work to be carried out immediately the objective was reached.'
