'On the night of 29th September 1917, when the 49th Battery was moving forward to occupy a forward position East of the WESTHOEK Ridge, an advance party was sent forward to prepare gun positions. No. 1021 Sergeant H.H.MARTIN who was in supervision of the party, realising the importance of having the platforms completed before the arrival of the guns, though the positions were being heavily shelled by enemy 4.2" and 5.9", by his splendid example and disregard of personal safety inspired all ranks to complete the task. The Battery on arrival were able to occupy the platforms without delay. This N.C.O.'s gallant conduct is worthy of special recognition.'
