Enlisted 1915; discharged from 12the Reinforcement, 4th Bn, 5 January 1916: 'services no longer required'. Absent without leave, 20 November-17 December 1915: 27 days. Lance Corporal L. Mutton, Military Police, stated, 15 December 1915: 'I beg to report that I was sent to No 4 Police Station to escort the above to barracks which I did and handed him over to the guard at the Provost Gaol. The accused said he was suffering from a venereal disease.' Re-enlisted, 29 April 1917. War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 10 May 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917. Marched in to 1st Training Bn, Durrington, 20 July 1917. Admitted to No 1 Group Clearing Hospital, Sutton Veny, 25 October 1917 (injured ankle); marched in to No 1 Command Depot, 28 November 1917; to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 6 December 1917; to Overseas Training Brigade, 3 January 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 23 January 1918; taken on strength, 1st Bn, 31 January 1918. Found guilty, 25 April 1918, of when on Active Service being absent without leave from 23/4/18 9 pm until apprehended at 10 am, 24/4/18: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited a total of 9 days' pay.
