'A cool good N.C.O. he has been a splendid example to his men under all conditions. During September/October,1917 operations in YPRES Salient, when there was great difficulty in getting material forward for roads, trains and tracks, by steadiness and firmness at critical times under heavy shell fire and through areas of gas, assisted Lieutenant WILLS in getting stores forward. He also organised carrying parties and did invaluable work in forward transport generally.'
