Distinguished Service Order 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He made a valuable reconnaissance at a critical moment to restore touch between two brigades, taking great risks under heavy shell fire, and leading his men with great skill and courage. Throughout the whole engagement his actions were marked by sound judgment and promptitude, especially when the command of his battalion had devolved upon himself.'
