Chaplain in active touch with the troops, has become so spent that is my bare duty to make room for a successor who will come with the fresh enthusiasm and vigour that this high duty undoubtedly demands. If this request is favourably considered, I shall remain if desired, till my successor reports, and on his arrival I respectfully seek the favour to be allowed a couple of months vacation without pay, for the purpose of seeing my relatives in the British Isles, as it may be the last opportunity I shall have of seeing them on this earth.'
