War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 5 April 1915. On Command, Divisional Headquarters, and rejoined 2nd Bn (Attached), 21 August 1915. On leave to Egypt, 25 October 1915; rejoined 2nd Bn, Gallipoli, 3 December 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 28 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Embarked Suez on board HS 'Karoola', for Australia (duty on board). Embarked Sydney on board HT 'Orsova', 11 March 1916; disembarked Suez (date indecipherable). Attached for duty to 2nd Bn, France, 13 June 1916. Appointed Chaplain 3rd Class, Temporary, England, 8 September 1916. Appointed Officer of the British Empire (OBE). Attached for duty to 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, in the field, from 2nd Bn, 3 December 1916. Transferred to England, 23 March 1917. On 25 November 1917 McAuliffe applied for permission to return to Australia: 'After the term of service which I have indicated I feel my energy which is so requisite for an R.C. Chaplain in active touch with the troops, has become so spent that is my bare duty to make room for a successor who will come with the fresh enthusiasm and vigour that this high duty undoubtedly demands. If this request is favourably considered, I shall remain if desired, till my successor reports, and on his arrival I respectfully seek the favour to be allowed a couple of months vacation without pay, for the purpose of seeing my relatives in the British Isles, as it may be the last opportunity I shall have of seeing them on this earth.'
