'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He, with another Officer and two NCO's carried out a difficult reconnaissance in full daylight and under heavy fire beyond our outpost lines, gaining valuable information, which established an important communication trench to be dug after night fall. During the construction of the trench he again showed great courage and ability.'
