'At LOUVERVAL on the 2nd April, 1917, this soldier by his fine example and bravery, exercised a very great influence on the men in his vicinity. on several occasions, seeing wounded men lying out under enemy fire, he went out through heavy fire and brought them back to cover to enable stretcher bearers, on their arrival, to deal quickly with the cases. Private McCARTHY was first in everything that was needed and displayed wonderful coolness throughout the BattalionUs tour of duty.'
