Embarked from Sydney on board HT 'Anchises', 24 January 1917; admitted to ship's hospital, 31 January 1917 (removal of ingrown toenail); discharged, 1 February 1917. Admitted to ships' hospital, 6 February 1917, and discharged, 7 February 1917. Disembarked Devonport, England, 27 March 1917.

Marched in to AIF Details camp, Fovant, and appointed Extra Duty Pay Corporal, 28 March 1917; marched in to 9th Training Bn, Durrington, 7 April 1917, and reverted to ranks, 8 April 1918.

Admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, 11 April 1917 (tonsilitis); discharged to 9th Training Bn, Durrington, 13 April 1917.

Appointed Acting Corporal, 29 May 1917; attended School of Musketry, Tidworth, from 30 May 1917 to 21 June 1917: Qualified 1st Class (Distinguished) and received instruction and has a fair knowledge of Lewis machine gun. Attached to No 3 Group Headquarters, Durrington, and appointed Acting/Sergeant, 14 September 1917. Promoted to rank of Corporal, 21 September 1917. Taken on strength of permanent cadre of 2nd Training Brigade Headquarters, Fovant, 7 November 1917; ceased duty on permanent cadre and marched in to 9th Training Bn, Fovant, 27 January 1918.

Proceeded overseas to France, 30 January 1918; marched in to Australian Intermediate Base Depot, Roulles, 31 January 1918; taken on strength 35th Bn, 8 February 1918.

Wounded in action and admitted to 55th Field Ambulance, 17 April 1918 (gassed); to 55th Casualty Clearing Station, 18 April 1918; admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 19 April 1918; to 2nd Convalescent Depot, Le Havre, 1 May 1918; transferred to 1st Australian Convalescent Depot, Le Havre, 2 May 1918; discharged to Australian General Base Depot, Le Havre, 8 June 1918. Rejoined unit, 13 June 1918.
