War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 8 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria on HMT 'Oriana' and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 29, March 1916; moved out to field, 23 April 1916; taken on strength of 23rd Bn, 24 April 1916. Admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance, 14 March 1917, and transferred to 2nd Divisional Rest Station (bronchial catarrh); ; discharged to duty, 24 March 1917; rejoined unit from hospital, 26 March 1917; proceeded on leave to England, 21 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 15 March 1918. Found guilty in the field, 29 March 1918, of being absent without leave, 7.30 am, 8 March, to 7.30 am, 13 March 1918: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 34 days' pay; appointed Lance Corporal, 24 July 1918; proceeded on leave to United Kingdom, 22 January 1919.
