Bar to Military Medal

'On the afternoon of the 19th May, the 10th Battery in LAGNICOURT VALLEY were being heavily shelled by 5.9" enemy guns. A direct hit was registered on No. 1 gun pit which set fire to the camouflage and ammunition. He threw earth on the burning wood-work and later completely extinguished the fire with water. By his promptness, energy and coolness, No. 1 gun, sights, and about 500 rounds of ammunition were saved. While engaged in this task another direct hit was registered by the enemy and No. 3 gun was blown completely out of its pit.'
