'On the 1st May, during a very heavy bombardment of the 10th Battery, a shell set fire to a dump of ammunition near one of the gun pits. This N.C.O. ran from where he had taken shelter, and at great personal risk, extinguished the fire, saving a large amount of ammunition. This N.C.O. has previously rendered gallant and meritorious service during the last twelve months.'

'On the afternoon of the 19th May, the 10th Battery in LAGNICOURT VALLEY were being heavily shelled by 5.9" enemy guns. A direct hit was registered on No. 1 gun pit which set fire to the camouflage and ammunition. Sergeant MCCROHAN, regardless of personal danger, rushed into the pit, and assisted by A/Bombardier PARK, threw out burning shells some of which exploded. He threw earth on the burning wood-work and later completely extinguished the fire with water. By his promptness, energy and coolness, No. 1 gun, sights, and about 500 rounds of ammunition were saved. While engaged in this task another direct hit was registered by the enemy and No. 3 gun was blown completely out of its pit.'
