'He accompanied his platoon Officer on a reconnaissance of a proposed Communication Trench on the afternoon of 7th and 8th June 1917 in front of MESSINES. The route lay parallel to the front line and necessitated his passing through an enemy barrage for a quarter of a mile, and then 500 yards across the open ground which was being swept by enemy machine guns. On the night of 8th under cover of darkness he guided his Company on to work, and had to make six trips through a barrage to do so. he set a fine example to his Company.'
