'For conspicuous gallantry. On September 1st 1918 at PERONNE, in daylight, this N.C.O. and his party of Sappers constructed a footbridge for Infantry over the first railway bridge entering PERONNE. This work was under direct observation and machine gun fire from FLAMICOURT, and was carried out deliberately, in the face of the enemy, and was completed successfully despite casualties. During September 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th., in the operations round PERONNE, and throughout under all conditions of fire, he set a magnificent example of courage and coolness to the men of his Section.'
