'During the attack of the 31st Battalion from WARFUSEE-ABANCOURT on the 8th August 1918 this N.C.O. displayed exceptional powers of leadership in addition to great personal bravery. He took charge of his platoon after the Platoon Commander had become a casualty and carried out the work in hand to its proper conclusion. He set a splendid example to those around him.'
