Served at Gallipoli. Evacuated from Gallipoli, and disembarked at Alexandria from Mudros, 9 January 1916. Admitted to 7th Field Ambulance, Ismailia (meningitis), 11 February 1916; rejoined Bn, 25 February 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 15 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 21 March 1916. Transferred to 7th Light Trench Mortar Battery, 19 April 1916. Admitted to 8th Field Ambulance (influenza), 8 July 1916; discharged to duty, 10 July 1916.

Unit moved to Belgium. Found guilty of being absent from Tattoo Roll Call, 7 September 1916: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No. 2. On course at Trench Mortar School, France, 18 August 1916; rejoined unit, 19 August 1916. Promoted Corporal, 3 December 1916. Awarded special mention in Sir Douglas Haig's despatch, 9 April 1917.

Wounded in action, 22 September 1917 (shell wound, left cheek). Admitted to 47th General Hospital Le Treport, 23 September 1917. Commended in 1st Anzac Corps Routine Orders No. 80, 3 October 1917. Rejoined unit from hospital, 14 October 1917. On leave, 5 December 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 26 January 1918.

Promoted Sergeant, 5 April 1918. On course at Australian Corps Infantry School, 24 August 1918. Admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville (influenza), 15 September 1918; discharged to duty, 27 September 1918. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 10 December 1918.
