Taken on strength, 17 Machine Gun Company and proceeded overseas to France, 17 March 1917.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 25 November 1917; promoted Corporal, 1 May 1918.

Wounded in action (gas shell), 25 May 1918; treated at 5th Field Ambulance and admitted to 20th Casualty Clearing Station, 28 May 1918. Transferred to Ambulance Train 28, Etaples, 2 June 1918, and evacuated to England, 3 June 1918. Admitted to Croydon War Hospital (gas poisoning), 3 June 1918; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 19 June 1918; discharged to No. 3 Convalescent Depot, Hurdcott, 24 June 1918; transferred to No. 1 Convalescent Depot, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, 30 July 1918.

Marched out to Machine Gun Training Depot, Parkhouse, 25 October 1918. Absent without leave, 30-31 December 1918: admonished and awarded forfeiture of one day's pay.

Commenced return to Australia from Liverpool, 19 February 1919; disembarked Brisbane, 6 April 1919. Discharged, 20 May 1919.
