'At BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES during the operations from 1st to 8th Oct., 1917, McGRATH displayed consummate coolness and marked devotion to duty. Throughout the operation he did splendid work. He was ever ready at his post and made long and dangerous observations when the artillery was particularly active. He afterwards volunteered and carried out reconnaissances of a most daring nature when an enemy attack was threatening our position.'

Proceeded overseas to England, 17 December 1916; marched in to Etaples, France, 18 December 1916; proceeded to unit, 25 January 1917; joined Bn, 26 January 1917; admitted to Hospital, 11 July 1917 (sick); discharged to duty, 14 July 1917.

Wounded in action, Belgium, 5 November 1917; admitted to Casualty Clearing Station, 8 November 1917; transferred to No 34 Ambulance Train, 9 November 1917; admitted to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 9 November 1917 (gassed); to England, 11 November 1917; awarded Military Medal, 20 November 1917; transferred to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 28 January 1918; discharged and granted leave, 31 January 1918: reported to No 4 Convalescent Depot, 14 February 1918.

Found guilty, 22 March 1918, of being absent without leave from 10:00 pm, 22 March to 1:10 pm, 27 March 1918: awarded 3 days' Field Punishment No 2 and forfeited 9 days' pay.

Marched out to No 2 Convalescent Depot, Weymouth, 11 May 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Essex', 7 June 1918; disembarked Sydney, 1 August 1918; discharged, 19 August 1918 (medically unfit).
