'On 23rd August, 1918 at PROYART, whilst in charge of Stretcher Bearing Squads temporarily attached to Regimental Aid Post he repeatedly evacuated wounded through an emtremely heavy barrage. Although gassed slightly himself he continued working. On 24th August, 1918, the positions were again heavily shelled, especially with gas shells, but he continued working, and by his splendid efforts casualties were quickly evacuated. Throughout he set a splendid example of courage and devotion to duty to his men, and by his personal efforts largely contributed to the rapid evacuation of casualties on both days.'
