'At WESTHOEK RIDGE from the 20th until 23rd instant this N.C.O. showed marked initiative in the handling of his section in carrying forward cable during an intense enemy bombardment. On the night of 22nd instant he considerably aided the successful establishing of a forward dump at ANZAC by his poer of control and personal influence on his section.'

'At DOMPIERE near Peronne on the 28th August, 1918, this N.C.O. was in charge of a bombing party in an attack. During the consolidation of the captured position, much trouble was being caused by a near-by enemy post. Acting on his own initiative MACKINNON attempted to outflank the post, but was prevented by very heavy machine gun fire. Although forced to work in a very exposed position and subject to continual enemy opposition he bombed the post with rifle grenades, and by accurate shooting forced the enemy to leave the position, and as they ran, sniped them, killing six. He displayed initiative and courage of a very high order.'
