'At about 5 a.m. on 4th July 1918 near HAMEL, EAST of CORBIE Pte. McLAREN whilst in charge of a squad of bearers displayed courage and resource of a very high order. He led his squad through a heavily shelled position with the greatest coolness and worked throughout the battle with great determination and energy when his strength had become exhausted. He was conspicuous among the squad leaders in courage and initiative.'
