'At POZIERES. Recommended for meritorious behaviour on night of 8th August, 1916, when, after succeeding in capturing enemy's position, he showed great courage and coolness in removing wounded to places of safety, all the time being under heavy artillery and machine gun fire, and even when wounded continued this work. When returning he assisted a wounded comrade across a fire swept zone though painfully wounded himself.'
