Allotted to and proceeded to join 9th Bn, Zeitoun, Egypt, 27 February 1916. Proceeded to join British Expeditionary Force from Alexandria, 27 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 3 April 1916.

Slightly wounded in the field, 5 June 1916, and admitted to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station; rejoined unit, 7 June 1916.

Wounded in action, second occasion, 21 August 1916; admitted (gun shot wound leg) to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 24 August 1916. Transferred to 6th Convalescent Depot, Etaples, 5 September 1916. Marched out from Base Depot to unit, 28 September 1916; rejoined unit in the field, 29 September 1916.

Admitted to hospital with scabies, 22 March 1917; returned to duty, 1 April 1917. On leave in the United Kingdom, 30 July-10 August 1917. On Australian Corps Intelligence course, 25 January-19 February 1918. Detached to 3rd Brigade Headquarters, 4 May 1918; rejoined unit in Belgium, 22 January 1919 (on leave in United Kingdom, 6-23 October 1918).

Left France for England prior to return to Australia, 3 February 1919; admitted to hospital, England with influenza, 28 February 1919; discharged to Depot, 14 March 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Suffolk', 14 April 1919; disembarked Australia, 5 June 1919; discharged, 30 July 1919.
