'During the operations in the vicinity of MONTBREHAIN, north of ST. QUENTIN, on 5th October, 1918, this N.C.O. carried out valuable patrol and liaison work. He established communication with a Company of 21st Battalion and displayed judgement and powers of organisation above the ordinary. When the enemy attempted to outflank his Company on the right he gathered a few men together and led them to a commanding position, thus forestalling the enemy plans and making his Company secure. Sergeant McNAIR's party sent back about twenty prisoners, and he himself accounted for four of the enemy.'
