Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in charge of his platoon. When his platoon commander became a casualty they held three posts in terribly marshy ground, two of them were blown in, and though blown up and badly shaken he established new ones, and refused to leave the front line, remaining for three days in awful weather and under very trying conditions.'
