Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous bravery on 8th August, 1915, on the Gallipoli Peninsula. He was, with others, sheltering in a sap when calls for help from some wounded were heard. In spite of very rapid and accurate shell fire, he went out and succeeded in bringing four wounded men back to safety. A sergeant who accompanied him was killed while they were carrying in the second wounded man, but, undeterred, he continued his work until all within reach were rescued.'
