Military Medal 'For extreme gallantry and devotion to duty on 18th September 1918 near Le Verquier, North West of St. Quentin. Sapper McRae was in charge of the LOOP Set allotted to the 12th A.I. Brigade forward party during the operations on 18th September 1918. Advancing behind the Infantry waves he kept his party and instruments together until the objective of the forward station was reached and although the party was heavily laden with instruments and accumulators and hampered by shell, and machine gun fire, he lost not time in reaching his station, setting up the instrument and getting urgent and important messages through to Brigade Headquarters. Owing to shell fire, the telephone lines were constantly cut, but Sapper McRae by his gallantry, energy and skill, was responsible for providing a sure means of communication.'
