'On September 20th 1917 near WESTHOEK this N.C.O. fought his Lewis Gun after the remainder of his crew had become casualties. On reaching the final objective he was posted well in advance to cover the consolidation. Here again, all but himself became casualties. he remained in position and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy until relieved. On relief he organised a crew for his gun and commanded it during the whole action.'
