'On 12th October 1917, East of YPRES, he displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action . This N.C.O. was in charge of a Lewis Gun team in the advance. The enemy Machine Gun fire from a Pill-box was intense, but by skilful use of his gun, he managed to beat down the fire and with great courage and ability, he led his team forward to the most advanced position. His cheerfulness and courage had a great effect on the remainder of his crew.'
