Military Medal 'On the night 3rd/4th September in the vicinity of HALLE (PERONNE) while working as stretcher bearer attached to 30th Australian Battalion he continually carried stretcher cases under heavy gas and H.E. Shelling of the road and tracks over which he had to travel. After the other members of his squad had been evacuated or relieved on account of gassing he continued at his post. His cheerful endurance of very trying conditions were a stimulus to the rest of his party and greatly assisted in efficiently maintaining the bearer services. The splendid work done by this man on this occasion is worthy of special recognition.'
