'During the operations North East of PERONNE commencing 28th August 1918 to 3rd September, 1918, this man's Battery was occupying a forward position in close support of the Infantry. During a heavy hostile area shoot embracing the Battery position, one of the ammunition dumps containing a large number of rounds was hit. This Gunner at once jumped out of the trench and with an utter disregard for personal safety and of the heavy hostile shelling, pulled away the burning ammunition at considerable danger to himself and saved a considerable number of rounds when the supply of ammunition was most difficult and every round was needed. By reason of the advanced position of the Battery, it was most important that knowledge of its location be denied to the enemy.'
