Previous military serviceEnlisted in January 1883 as a bugler, Parramatta Company of the 3rd NSW Infantry Regiment; served almost continuously in the military until his death. Enlisted in the 2nd West Australian Contingent in the South African War, 1899; on his return joined the 14th Battery, Australian Field Artillery. Went to London as part of the military representation at the coronation of Edward VII. Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, 1905; Lieutenant, 1907; Captain, 1908. Later promoted major and placed in command of Guildford Battery.
