'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in laying 1,000 yards of wire during an attack, and finally establishing his forward report centre within 400 yards of the enemy posts. For eighteen hours he worked continuously under heavy fire, mending breaks in the line. On three occasions he voluntarily carried messages to the forward posts in broad daylight. He was wounded in the leg, but carried on until relieved eighteen hours later. He was thrice buried by shell fire.'
